Coupled hydro-mechanical modelling of soil–vegetation–atmosphere interaction in natural clay slopes

نویسندگان

چکیده

Soil–vegetation–atmosphere interaction has long been known to induce significant pore pressure variations at shallow depths and associated superficial slope movements. Recent findings suggest that the effect of this may also extend large in natural clay slopes. Multiple examples weather-induced deep landslide mechanisms can be found Southern Apennines (Italy), where slopes are often formed fissured clays. The relationship between activity these landslides hydro-mechanical processes due soil–vegetation–atmosphere was investigated herein by means a two-dimensional coupled finite element analysis. A constitutive model capable simulating behaviour highly overconsolidated clays, both saturated unsaturated states, adopted analysis, conjunction with boundary condition reproducing combined effects rainfall infiltration, evapo-transpiration, run-off. results analysis corroborate connection weather conditions, variations, movements importance adequately geological history define its current state is demonstrated.

Thermo-hydro-mechanical Coupling in Clay Barriers

A complete thermo-hydro-mechanical model is presented to tackle the complex coupling problems encountered in clay barriers. A detailed formulation coupling the heat, moisture (liquid water and water vapour) and, air transfer in a deformable unsaturated soil is given. The formulation of the AlonsoGens’s mechanical model for unsaturated soil is also incorporated. The sensitivity to some parameter...

Preliminary laboratory thermo - hydro - mechanical characterization of Opalinus clay

1 INSTRODUCTION In the concept of geological radioactive waste disposal, argillite is being considered as a possible host rock in various countries such as France and Switzerland. This material is chosen thanks to its extremely low permeability that is required to limit the transfer of radioactive elements from the waste package towards the environment. During the construction and exploitation ...

A Pore-scale Hydro-mechanical Coupled Model for Geomaterials

We present a model for fluid-saturated granular media coupled flow and mechanical deformation. The fluid is assumed to be incompressible and the solid part is assumed to be a cohesive granular material. Forces exerted by the fluid in motion are determinated and applied to solid particles. We derive a finite volumes formulation of the flow problem and we couple it to a discrete element method (D...

Softening and instability of natural slopes in highly fissured plastic clay shales

Softening is often considered to be the main cause of first-time slides in OC clay, but so far the mechanics of softening has not been satisfactorily explained. Bearing on laboratory data and field observations about landslides in tectonized highly plastic clay shales of Italian Apennines, the paper describes a process of soil weakening that could explain some failures of natural slopes.
